Nanaimo Company is Top New Exporter in BC

The Honourable Iain Black, Minister of Technology, Trade and Economic Development, spoke Friday at the 2009 BC Export Awards, where the Nanaimo company, K2 Stone, was honoured for their achievements in the New Exporter Category. The ceremony, held in Vancouver, which celebrates of the "success of the provinces global traders...is the oldest awards ceremony of its kind in Canada."

The speech by Minister Black touched on the value of exporting as a contributor to our local economy, and the evidence of this is abundant in K2 Stone's Vancouver Island operations. They started about five years ago in Nanaimo selling building stone, and have since expanded operations to include five franchises across BC and Alberta, as well as distribution down the West Coast of the United States. The connection to BC's economy is more evident when you consider that K2 Stone employs over 60 people in Nanaimo, and sources almost exclusively from Vancouver Island. They are young entrepreneurial venture still building momentum, striving to be an industry leader in North America while maintaining their community focus.

K2 Stone quarries natural metamorphic slate on the West Coast of Vancouver Island with a production facility in Nanaimo. They specialize in a thin stone veneer which is commonly used as wall cladding. The product, which is only about an inch thick, is a popular building material boasting all the engineering advantages of an artificial product, while retaining the durability and beauty of real stone. By nature of its reduced weight, and unequalled qualities, K2's thin stone has achieved a remarkable level of success here in Canada with locations in Nanaimo, Victoria, Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary and Edmonton.

K2 was among three other Vancouver Island based companies that were selected in other categories for BC Export Awards. That number is impressive when you consider that there were only eight winners selected from more than 400 nominations. It is a great tip of the hat to Vancouver Island business, and our competitiveness in the global market. K2 also won a Mid-Island Science Technology and Innovation Council Award for a Value Added Products. It is the second year in a row they have been finalists for this award.

K2 Stone has recently added a brand new sandblasting booth at our Nanaimo production facility. It is large enough to handle almost any sized job, and we offer design services too!
